Ekaterina Gawrilowna Tschislowa ( Russian Екатерина Гавриловна Числова , born September 21, 1846 in Ligovo near Saint Petersburg , †  December 13, 1889 in the Crimea ) was a Russian ballerina and the mistress of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich Romanov .

Life

Yekaterina was the daughter of Gabriel Tschislow and was part of the Kirov Ballet Ensemble , a world-famous Russian ballet company from Saint Petersburg, from an early age . She was the partner of the famous Felix Kschessinsky, father of Matilda Felixowna Kschessinskaja , in the Polish Masurka .

In 1865 she fell in love with the Russian Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Romanow , third son of Tsar Nicholas I and Princess Charlotte of Prussia , and became his mistress for many years, even though he was married to Princess Alexandra of Oldenburg, who was of German descent . Five children emerged from the mutual connection:

  • Vladimir (1873–1942), adjutant to Tsar Nicholas II.

The couple often traveled together to San Remo and the Crimea . In 1880 the Grand Duchess Alexandra retired to a monastery near Kiev . Ekaterina was an ambitious woman and achieved that Tsar Alexander III. raised her and her children to a lower nobility in 1882 and granted the common surname Nikolaiev . Ekaterina Tschislowa died unexpectedly on December 13, 1889 in the Crimea and was buried in the monastery in Saint Petersburg as Ekaterina Gavrilovna Nikolaiev . Grand Duke Nikolai, who suffered from cancer, died two years later and was buried next to his mistress .
