Elisabeth - The legend of a saint
Elisabeth - The Legend of a Saint is a musical about Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia in two acts. The authors are Dennis Martin and Peter Scholz of the spotlight musical production , who have alreadyrealizedthe musical Bonifatius . In contrast to the musical Elisabeth by Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze , it does notdeal withthe biography of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary , but of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia. The world premiere took place on the occasion of the Elisabeth Year on July 7, 2007 in the State Theater in Eisenach . There were revivals in 2008 and 2009 in Eisenach as well as in autumn 2008 and in December 2009 some performances in Marburg . Since 2014, musical art Weißenfels has been staging a semi-professional production of the musical, which will enter its third season in 2015. In the 2014 Musical1.de musical elections, the production was voted "Best amateur musical" with 22% of all votes cast.
action
The action on the stage is a critical examination of the different perspectives handed down from St. Elizabeth. This is represented in the play by the historical-critical narrator Wolfram von Eschenbach and the glorifying-transfigured narrator Walther von der Vogelweide , who are engaged in a singing dispute about how the story of the landgrave should be told.
first act
Elisabeth , the little king's daughter of Hungary , came to the court of the Thuringian Landgrave Hermann I at the age of four . At this age she was promised to the heir to the throne Ludwig as wife. Both children grow up together on the Wartburg and when Ludwig becomes the new Landgrave after the death of his father, he marries 14-year-old Elisabeth - out of sincere affection and love. While Elisabeth gives birth to two children, she turns more and more to Christian values and religious rituals around the fanatical crusade priest Konrad von Marburg , which increasingly clash with her role as landgrave. She would like to overcome the class differences to the poor and lepers and thus repeatedly meets with rejection , especially among Ludwig's brother Heinrich and the court. Heinrich wants to convict Elisabeth, who supports the needy in a poor house she founded with covered baskets full of bread. But Elisabeth finds full support in her husband Ludwig, who insists that Elisabeth would only transport roses in her basket, which he also proves to his brother, because under the cloth - at least on this day - there are actually roses (the rose miracle of Elisabeth) . The joyful gratitude that those in need show her fills her with inner satisfaction and deep happiness. She believes she has found her job and her place in life.
Second act
Ludwig goes on the crusade to Jerusalem together with Emperor Friedrich II , while Thuringia is ravaged by a famine and Elisabeth opens the granaries of the castle in order to save the lives of thousands of people. But when Ludwig dies of an epidemic far from home, Elisabeth becomes a widow at the age of 20. Her brother-in-law Heinrich took over the government and finally banished Elisabeth from the Wartburg, not least because of her generosity. Along with the ever deluded becoming priest Konrad she goes to Marburg , to meet with her Witwengut, the Konrad Heinrich in exchange for Elizabeth's children could agree to a hospice to finance. Elisabeth's third child Gertrud, who was only born after Ludwig's death, gave Elisabeth to a monastery on the advice of Konrad in order to devote herself entirely to the poor, to whom she gave everything. Elisabeth recognized Konrad's thirst for power too late, which had little in common with her lofty goals, and she suffered a collapse from which she could no longer recover. Elisabeth died penniless at the age of 24. Konrad quickly promoted Elizabeth's canonization and was appointed by the Pope as the first German Grand Inquisitor . After many executions and burns, Konrad becomes insane and later murdered. Elisabeth's selfless work as a saint , however, remains forever in the memory of the people.
