His father, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, the Rav of Rudnik, taught the young Jekusiel the love of Hasidut (Hasidic philosophy) and Torah doctrine , shared with him the stories of how the Divrei Chaim taught, prayed and directed his table (Yiddish טיש; Shabbat - and Jewish festival table).

He later studied with other leading Hasidic Rebbe, including Rabbi Myer Jechiel von Ostrovtza , Rabbi Chaim Elazar Spira, and his great-uncle Rabbi Shalom Eliezer Halberstam von Ratzfert .
