Jenna Behrends

Jenna Behrends (* 1990 ) is a Berlin politician ( CDU ) and a member of the district council of the Mitte district .

Life

Behrends grew up in the Osnabrück area in Lower Saxony . As an exchange student , she went to Costa Rica for a year . The Konrad Adenauer Foundation promoted her after school in Heidelberg , Copenhagen and Berlin completed an law degree . In addition to her studies, she completed journalistic training as part of the foundation's promotion of young talent (including positions at Die Welt , the German Press Agency and the Focus capital city office) and worked as a student assistant for a CDU MP. Behrends is the mother of a daughter born in 2013.

Behrends has been a member of the CDU since 2015 . Her first book Rabenvater Staat: Why our family policy needs a fresh start was published in January 2019 .

Member of the district council assembly

Since 2016, Behrends has been elected to the fifth district council assembly in the center of Berlin via the district list. She is a member of the “Submissions and Complaints” and “Citizens' Services and Housing” committees.

Sexism controversy

When Behrends published an open letter with allegations of sexism against her party in the feminist online magazine Edition F , she came into the public eye nationwide. The Senator for the Interior and top candidate of the Berlin CDU , Frank Henkel , described her as a “big sweet mouse” and asked a colleague: “Do you fuck her?”. Henkel did not deny the statements, but was disappointed with the content and style of the letter. On October 17, 2016, Henkel apologized to Jenna Behrends in front of party friends during the district assembly center of the CDU parliamentary group. He did not mean the salutation "big sweet mouse" annoying, but nice. Regarding the second allegation, that he asked his fellow party member Sven Rissmann, "Do you fuck her?", He said that this was not part of his language usage.

There were controversial publications in the German press. In particular, it was said that Behrends had initiated a renewed debate about sexism in politics. At the beginning of 2018, Zeit-Online reported a survey by HuffPost . The HuffPost asked 250 women of the Junge Union , the Jusos , the Young Liberals , the Left Youth and the Green Youth about their experiences with sexism in the youth organizations of the parties. According to the report, one in three women said they had been sexually harassed in the course of their political work. Some women reported rapes to HuffPost. One politician who wanted to remain anonymous wrote: "I was raped on a political weekend". Incidentally, Behrend's allegations also sparked controversy within the CDU.
