Jenny Nimmo

Jenny Nimmo (born January 15, 1944 in Windsor ) is a British writer of books for children and young people . Her work has been awarded several prizes. She is best known for the Charlie Bone book series about the adventures of the title hero as a descendant of a magician.

life and work

Jenny Nimmo initially worked as an actress, screenwriter and department head for the BBC 's children's program . In 1975 she published her first children's book, The Bronze Trumpeter . For her novel The Snow Spider , she was awarded the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 1986 by Booktrust , an independent English foundation for the promotion of reading . Also for The Snow Spider she received the " Tir na n-Og Award " in 1987 from the Welsh Books Council (WBC) . In 1997 Nimmo received the Gold Award of the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize for The Owl Tree .

She was best known for her book series Charlie Bone . Nimmo, who attended boarding school between the ages of six and eleven, tells the story of the title hero as a boarding school student with magical abilities. In the USA alone, a total of more than three million copies of the series could be sold by October 2005.

Jenny Nimmo is married to the painter David Wynn Millward . She has three children and lives in an old windmill in Wales .

In the original edition, the series appeared under the title Snow Spider . The second volume ( Emlyn's Moon ) was published again in 1989 under the differing title Orchard of the Crescent Moon with ISBN 0-525-44438-6 .

The German-language edition was illustrated by Regina Kehn .

Charlie Bone

Charlie Bone's life changes suddenly when he discovers that, like many in his family, he has a special ability. As soon as he looks at a photo, he can hear the voices of the people depicted there as well as the noises surrounding them. His grandmother and her sisters have long been waiting for his gift to appear and are sending him to Bloor Academy immediately. This boarding school teaches students with special talents in music, art and theater as well as children with “special gifts” like Charlie. At the academy, he finds out more and more about his missing father and experiences dangerous adventures with new friends.

The series was originally designed for five volumes and eventually comprised eight volumes. In the English-language editions, individual volumes were published under up to three different titles. The cover pictures of the German-language editions were designed by Regina Kehn .

The Secret Kingdom

The trilogy is about the origins and adventures of Timokens, the magical ancestor of Charlie Bone. The English edition of the series appeared under the title The Secret Kingdom , the American edition under the title Chronicles of the Red King .
