Jerónimo José Podestá (born August 8, 1920 in Ramos Mejía ; † June 23, 2000 ) was the Catholic Bishop of Avellaneda in Argentina.

Life

Jerónimo José Podestá was ordained a priest on September 15, 1946 .

After his appointment as Bishop of Avellaneda on 25 September 1962 he received on 22 December 1962 the Archbishop of La Plata , Antonio José Plaza , the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of San Rafael , Raúl Francisco Primatesta , and Auxiliary Bishop Ernesto Segura from Buenos Aires .

He took part in the second, third and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a Council Father.

Because of Podestá's political work, the dictator Juan Carlos Onganía urged the Vatican to remove the bishop. On December 2, 1967 Podestá resigned as Bishop of Avellaneda and was appointed titular bishop of Horrea Aninici until he left the church in 1971. Podestá was against celibacy and in favor of women's ordination and after his suspension married his secretary Clelia Luro.

Podestá was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and was elected to the Continuation of Work Committee at the IV All-Christian Peace Assembly in 1971.

Rómulo Braschi traces his - according to the notarial act - allegedly carried out on January 30, 1999 "sub conditione" episcopal ordination back to Podestá.

The "bishops" Christine Mayr-Lumetzberger and Gisela Forster also attribute their apostolic succession to Podestá .
