Jeronimus (Hieronymus) Spengler, was the son of Caspar Spengler (1553–1604) from St. Gallen . The father was also a glass painter himself and moved to Constance in 1582, where he opened a workshop. Jeronimus followed his father in choosing a career. It is known from his time as a journeyman that he came to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1606 , where he worked in the workshop of the glass painter Matthäus Federer (1575–1604). In 1611 he returned to Constance, where he also delivered his masterpiece in 1612. It is also known that he renewed his civil rights in Constance in 1613. Archduke Maximilian III. from Austria called him to Innsbruck in 1615 , where he was supposed to make glass paintings for the court church and to repair those in the church of the Holy Cross. From 1616 he was again active in and around Constance.

He died in Constance in 1635. The Spengler family from Constance includes the glass painters Johann Wolfgang Spengler (1624–1685) and Johann Georg Spengler (1660–1737).

Works

Jeronimus Spengler, who signed his works with I.SP, tended to work for private customers and often went on tour. Since the Spengler family produced five generations of glass painters and the individual members were quite generous with their initials, it is often difficult to assign a work to a particular family glass painter. In addition to the order for the court church in Innsbruck, two other municipal orders by Jeronimus Spengler from 1616 and 1617 in Constance are known. He also made a disc for the Wettingen monastery in 1611 and one for the Mellingen parish church in 1630 , which has been preserved in situ. In addition, there are many exhibits in museums with his initials, but it is often difficult to really assign them to him.

In addition to working as a glass painter, he also made court representations in Constance.

  2. The disc was donated to the monastery by Christoph Vogeler and Anna Hauser as a profession of their son P. Johann Konrad Vogler in 1621. That is why the dating is controversial, because it would be the oldest signed work by Jeronimus Spengler.
