Astronaut activity

Linenger was selected in 1992 by NASA with the 14th astronaut group as one of 15 mission specialists. Basic training began in the summer of 1992 and was completed after a year.

STS-64

Linenger made his first flight in September 1994 with the space shuttle Discovery . The LITE laser-optical radar system was tested as part of STS-64 . Another task was the deployment and recovery of the astronomical research satellite SPARTAN-201 , a free-flying satellite for researching the solar wind and the solar corona . After eleven days in space, he landed on September 20, 1994 at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Use on the Mir

During his second mission, Linenger was a guest on the Russian Mir space station for 132 days , a record at the time for an American astronaut. He had the opportunity to fly in a Russian spaceship when the Soyuz TM-24 was relocated from one Mir coupling to another on February 7, 1997 . In addition, he was the first American astronaut to wear a Russian cosmonaut suit during an external mission in space.

He ended his career as an astronaut in 1998 after his successful mission in the Mir space station.
