Jerry Underwood

Jerry Underwood (born August 14, 1956 in Leicester , † August 3, 2002 in Chambery ) was a British tenor and soprano saxophonist of modern jazz .

Underwood learned the clarinet at school . He sang in St John's Choir in Cambridge before studying art in Bristol . There he turned to the saxophone , supported by Paul Dunmall . He first played in Bristol in the jazz rock group Tao , then (together with Andy Sheppard ) with Klaunstance , before he founded the quartet Bullet together with Geoff Williams and from 1989 played with Tim Richards in Spirit Level , with whom he recorded three albums and was involved in several European tours. He also performed with Tony Levin at the Viersen Jazz Festival in 1987 ( Live in Viersen ). In the early 1990s he moved to London, where he worked with Mervyn Africa , Gail Thompson's big band Jazz Africa and Elton Dean ( The Vortex Tapes ). In 1993 and 1994 he was part of Sheppard's big band Big Co-Motion . In 1995 he played alongside Dick Heckstall-Smith for the Bop Brothers . In 1997 he toured with Carla Bly's big band (and was previously involved in their recording ... Goes to Church ). The following year he became a member of Jacqui McShees Pentangle ; he also worked for several years with John Martyn . At the end of the 1990s he moved to France, where he quickly made contact with the French scene; he has also performed with the Dave Gordon Quartet. Since the end of 2000 he had been living with an inoperable brain tumor .
