Jerusalem ( Māori Hiruhārama ) is a settlement in the Whanganui District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 22 km southwest of Raetihi , embedded in the surrounding mountains directly on the Whanganui River . The connection to the settlement leads over a 33 km long gravel road over the settlement Pipiriki .
history
The settlement was once a fishing village on the Whanganui River and was named after the biblical Jerusalem .
In 1854 a Roman Catholic missionary station was opened in the settlement and in 1892 Suzanne Aubert founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion . The convent buildings and the monastery church, which replaced the first church destroyed by fire in 1888, have been preserved on the mission site .
The New Zealand poet James K. Baxter and his followers formed a commune in Jerusalem in 1970. Baxter is buried in the settlement.
