Raetihi is a place in the Ruapehu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located around 30 km southwest of the summit of the Mount Ruapehu volcano and west of the Mangawhero River . The New Zealand State Highway 4 runs through Raetihi and connects the town with Wanganui , which is about 60 km south-southwest . About 10 km to the east is the nearest town Ohakune .
history
Although Raetihi is a small rural community today, it was a smaller industrial center between 1900 and the 1950s. Around 1900 the place was the largest metropolitan area in the King Country with almost 4,500 inhabitants. Numerous sawmills were the main employers in the region. When the surrounding forests were cleared, the sawmills had to close and agriculture became the most important source of income, especially through cattle breeding and vegetable growing. A cooperative dairy was founded in 1903.
From December 18, 1917 to January 1, 1968, Raetihi was served by the Raetihi Branch , a branch line branching off from the North Island's main railway line , the North Island Main Trunk Railway , in Ohakune . The station building was later rededicated and restored as the Waimarino Museum . The museum has an archive of documents and photos from the wider area around Mount Ruapehu .
The decline of the timber industry had a negative impact on the place, but tourism saw a slight boom in the 2000s. Its proximity to Mount Ruapehu and its ski areas has led to the emergence of overnight accommodations and cafes for an increasing number of visitors.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1002 inhabitants, 3.2% less than in the 2006 census.
Events
On March 18, 1918, a large fire destroyed around 200 houses, and in the same year the place was ravaged by the Spanish flu .
