Jerzy Stanisław Holzer (born August 24, 1930 in Warsaw ; † January 14, 2015 there ) was a Polish historian and publicist . He was a professor of contemporary history at Warsaw University .

Life

Holzer came from an assimilated Jewish family. From 1950 to 1954 he studied history. His doctorate followed in 1960, his habilitation in 1969. Holzer took a critical stance on the regime in Poland since the mid-1960s . Among other things, he criticized the anti-Semitic smear campaign of the Polish government in 1967 and defended the student revolt of 1968 . He also condemned the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops in 1968.

Holzer had been monitored by the Polish State Security Service since 1966. From 1977 to 1989 he was active in the Polish opposition movement, among other things as a German political advisor to the Parliamentary Citizens' Club / Solidarność . Holzer has been a visiting professor in Germany several times. In 1989 he received a professorship for contemporary history at the University of Warsaw.

From 1990 to 2006 he headed the Department for German Studies at the Institute for Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences . Between 2000 and 2004 he was also director of this department. Together with many other personalities, Holzer advocated the establishment of a European center against displacement in 2003.

In 2005, press reports that Holzer had been working with the Polish State Security since 1965 caused a stir. Shortly thereafter, however, it turned out that this was inadmissibly shortened and incorrectly presented information.

Holzer died in mid-January 2015 at the age of 84 in his native Warsaw.
