Jerzy Kolendo

Jerzy Władysław Kolendo (born June 9, 1933 in Brest am Bug ; died February 28, 2014 ) was a Polish ancient historian and classical archaeologist .

Jerzy Kolendo graduated in history in 1955 at the University of Warsaw , where he in 1960 with a thesis on the Roman colonies of the 1st and 2nd century in the province of Africa doctorate was. At the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences , to which he was a member from 1955 to 1981, he received his habilitation in 1968 and was appointed professor in 1979. In 1981 he became a lecturer, and in 1990 professor at the Archaeological Institute of Warsaw University, where he taught until his retirement in 2003. Guest professorships took him to the University of Padua in 1983 and 1986 , to the University of Strasbourg in 1988 and to the Université Paris 1 Panthéon from 1993 to 1994 -Sorbonne . In 2011 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for his services .

Kolendo's scientific work comprises more than 500 essays and monographs. They were mainly devoted to topics of the Roman Empire such as food production, slavery , but again and again, above all, Rome's relations to the Barbaricum and Limes problems . The geographical focus was on Carthage and North Africa , areas in which he carried out intensive epigraphic studies. In addition, he was interested in antiquarian studies in Poland and in Polish science from the 16th to the late 19th century, as well as the consequences of the Great Emigration after the November uprising in Poland in 1830/31.
