Jesper Rasmussen Brochmand , also Caspar Erasmus Brochmand (born August 5, 1585 in Køge , † April 19, 1652 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish Lutheran theologian .

Life

Brochmand was born the son of Mayor Rasmus Sørensen Brochmand (1537-1599). After he had received his first training in the then famous Herlufsholm School and studied at the Universities of Leiden and Franeker from 1603 to 1608 , the University of Copenhagen hired him as a teaching professor in 1610 . Three years later he also took over the teaching of the Greek language . As the successor of Hans Poulsen Resen (1561-1638), with whom he was friends, rose to professor of theology in 1615, he followed this in 1639 in the office of Bishop of Roskilde , which he held until his death at the age of 66 years. From 1617 to 1620 he was the teacher of Crown Prince Christian , the son of King Christian IV , and in 1623/24 and 1629/30 as rector of the University of Copenhagen.

Brochmand is counted among the most important representatives of Lutheran orthodoxy . He sat down not only in Denmark against the influence of Reformed and Jesuit one but worked with his at the Concord -based Systema in Germany. As bishop, he introduced the nationwide keeping of church registers , abolished Latin choral singing and justified the sermons on Wednesdays during Lent . His postille was still in use in the 19th century.
