Jesse Lynch Williams

Jesse Lynch Williams (* 17th August 1871 in Sterling , Illinois ; † 14. September 1929 in Herkimer , New York ) was an American journalist , author of novels and short stories and playwright , best known for his play Why Marry? In 1918 he was the first playwright to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Theater .

Life

After graduating, Williams graduated from Princeton University and became the first editor of the Princeton Review after graduation . Together with John De Witt , he was the author of the book The History of Princeton University . In the following years he not only worked as a journalist, but also wrote novels and short stories as well as plays.

In 1918 he received for his play Why Marry? first playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize for Theater . Since 1908 he was an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
