Jesús Gil y Gil (born March 11, 1933 in El Burgo de Osma , Soria province , † May 14, 2004 in Madrid ) was a Spanish politician and entrepreneur .

Gil headed the traditional Spanish football club Atlético Madrid between June 26, 1987 and May 28, 2003 for a total of 16 years. He only resigned from the presidency at the age of 70 . The typical reason for Gil: “I am now 70 years old and there are so many amateurs who have criticized me. I don't have to do that to myself anymore. ”But he held the majority of shares in the club until his death.

Under Gil's leadership Atlético Madrid won the Spanish championship and the cup in 1996 . In 2000 the club rose for the first time in more than 66 years in the second division, the Segunda División .

Only in 2002 did Atlético return to the Primera División , the first Spanish football league. In April 2002, had to Gil a week in custody spend because he was accused, in his ten-year tenure as mayor of Marbella - his party Independent Liberal Group an absolute majority had in 1991 received in the municipal elections - 26 million euros to have embezzled. He was released on payment of a deposit of 700,000 euros.

As Mayor of Marbella, he was responsible for a building and investment boom in the city, but sparked heated controversy over massive circumvention of environmental protection regulations.

Even during his tenure as Atlético boss, in which 26 coaches had to vacate their posts prematurely, Gil often had trouble with the judiciary and made headlines again and again with his numerous escapades.

On May 8, 2004, Gil suffered a stroke and had to be ventilated until his death - at the age of 71 -. Gil, who had been suffering from high blood pressure for a long time , had to rely on a pacemaker since the beginning of 2003 and died on May 14, 2004 in the CEMTRO clinic in Madrid as a result of a stroke. The laying out took place in the Vicente Calderón Stadium . He is buried in an Atletico flag in the Almudena city cemetery. His son, Miguel Ángel, remains the club's general manager .

One (true) anecdote demonstrating his eccentric lifestyle goes back to his purchase of an aircraft carrier . When a reporter asked why he bought the discarded ship, he replied, "Because I haven't had one yet."
