Evgeni Alexandrowitsch Evstignejew ( Russian Евгений Александрович Евстигнеев , scientific transliteration Evgenij Aleksandrovič Evstigneev ; born October 9, 1926 in Nizhny Novgorod ; † March 4, 1992 in London ) was a Russian film and theater actor. From the 1960s and until his death, he was one of the most famous actors in the country.

Life

Yevgeny Yevstigneyev was born into a working-class family in Nizhny Novgorod. During the Second World War he worked as a locksmith in a factory. In 1951 he completed an acting apprenticeship at Moscow's Gorky Theater and then worked at the Vladimir Theater . From 1954 to 1956 he attended the drama school of the Chekhov Art Theater in Moscow . In 1957 he got an engagement at the newly founded Sovremennik Theater , where he appeared as Satin in Maxim Gorkis Nachtasyl , as King in Yevgeny Schwarz ' The Naked King and in the roles of Kuropejew and Murowejew in Alexander Wolodin's The Appointment . In 1971 he moved back to the Chekhov Art Theater.

Yevstigneyev made his film debut in 1957 in Vladimir Petrov's The Duel . In the course of his career he made a name for himself as a grotesque comedian, who was able to characterize representatives of different social classes with his play through particularly apt representation of their human weaknesses. He gained general fame through his role as pioneer camp director in Elem Klimov's film Dobro poschalowat, ili Postoronnim vchod vospreschtschon (1964). He also played important roles in Alexander Alows and Vladimir Naumov's The Flight (1971), as Batyushka in Viktor Gres ' children's film The Black Chicken (1981) and as the blacksmith Nikita Demidow in Yaropolk Lapschin's The Armourer of the Urals (1983). One of Yevstigneyev's most prominent roles was his portrayal of Professor Preobrazhensky in the television film adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov 's 1988 story “ Dog's Heart ”.

In 1974 Yevstigneyev was awarded the State Prize of the USSR and in 1983 the title of People's Artist of the USSR . The actor died of heart surgery in a London clinic in 1992. He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.
