Jiří Šmíček (born November 12, 1963 ) is a former German - Czech ice hockey player .

Career

Jiří Šmíček played both ice hockey and tennis as a youth in his Czech homeland . At first he celebrated some successes as a tennis player and was one of the best in his country among the youngsters. But due to the better training conditions and the much greater popularity of ice hockey in what was then Czechoslovakia , Šmíček decided to pursue a career in ice hockey. In 1984 the striker with a shot on the left initially moved to North America, where he only played one game for Fredericton Express in the AHL . During the season he moved to Germany, where he played in the 1st Bundesliga for the Düsseldorfer EG . In 1988/89 he played for Eintracht Frankfurt for one year . He then worked for the EHC Freiburg for four years and for the EC Ratingen for two years . Overall, Šmíček played over 400 Bundesliga / DEL games in his career and scored more than 200 points scorer .

For the 1995/96 season , Šmíček moved to the second highest German division, the first division , where he played briefly for ASV Hamm and then for three years for the Mosquitos Essen . After a brief return to Freiburg, he played two years for the Gelsenkirchen EC "Schalker Haie" in the third division . In 2000 he moved to the regional league team Neusser EV for three years . Since 2003, Šmíček played, interrupted by a year at EC Dorsten , for EHC Solingen and its successor club EC Bergisch Land . Before the 2006/07 season he ended his active career and took over the coaching post of the Raptors , but returned to the ice halfway through the season. For the rest of the year, as well as the beginning of the season, he appeared as a player-coach, but left the club in October 2007 because the club took an austerity course. Since then, Šmíček has been inactive, but he agreed with the Raptors that if the financial situation improves, he will play for the club again.

In addition to his work as a trainer with the Raptors in Solingen, Šmíček has been running a tennis school in Neuss for several years .
