Jiří Šust

Jiří Šust (born August 29, 1919 in Prague ; † April 30, 1995 there ) was a Czech film composer .

Life

Professional creation

Jiří Šust learned to play the piano at a young age. His parents did not grant his wish to study music, but instead insisted on attending a business academy. After he was expelled from this, Šust went to Moscow, where his father worked as a member of the Czechoslovak embassy. Šust passed the entrance exam at the local conservatory and studied piano and composition . At the beginning of the Second World War he returned to Prague and continued his studies in composition.

In 1941, Šust began working as a film composer in the Zlín film studios . One of his first jobs was the melody for a commercial for the local shoe company Bata . By 1946 he had composed 14 films in Zlín, after which Šust returned to Prague and worked in the Barrandov film studios and in the army film studio, where in the course of his career he wrote the music for over 80 feature films and countless television films and series. Well-known directors Šust worked with included Věra Chytilová , František Vláčil and especially Jiří Menzel , for whom he composed the music for eleven of his films over the course of 30 years and whom Šust referred to as his “court composer”.

In addition to film music, Šust also composed marching songs and so-called “street hits ” as well as the monumental work Concerto Bohemo .

Private

During the Second World War , Jiří Šust actively fought against fascism . While Šust was able to hide from the Gestapo for a long time , his younger brother was interned in a concentration camp, but survived imprisonment. In contrast, Šust's mother and stepfather perished in concentration camps.
