Jiří Bittner (born January 23, 1846 in Milavetsch , Pilsen region, † May 6, 1903 in Prague ) was a Bohemian actor, translator of plays, author of humoresques and memoirs.

Life

Bittner attended the secondary school on Ječná Street in Prague and, as a high school student, took part in the January uprising in Lviv in 1863 , in which he was wounded. He finished high school a year later in Písek . After graduation, he became an actor with Kramuel's traveling company and stayed there until he volunteered for the Imperial and Royal Army in 1866 .

After the Austro-Prussian War he worked first in the theater " Prozatímní divadlo " (from 1866), then with a German-speaking troupe in Meiningen (1877–1879), in the Victoria Theater in Berlin (1879–1880) and from 1881 to 1900 as well from 1901 to 1903 at the National Theater in Prague. He was mainly a performer of salon types and difficult characters with negative connotations, such as B. the Iago in Shakespeare's Othello . He also wrote some shorter prose texts from the theater environment and translated comedies , mainly from Polish and German. His wife was Marie Bittnerova, née Baubinová, an actress at the Czech National Theater.

An actor with the same name is mentioned in the play " Záskok " by Jára Cimrman . Although it has not been proven that the above-mentioned Jiří Bittner is meant, the characterization of the person fits the real Jiří Bittner.

“Jiří Bittner only survived his maruška by 5 years and a few months: he died in the spring of 1903. The death of his wife hit him hard physically and mentally. After she died, he went to Berlin to visit his theater friends, only to retire afterwards with his modest actor's pension and lived a secluded life. Jaroslav Kvapil "
