Jiří Urbánek

Jiří Urbánek (born January 28, 1944 in Frýdek-Místek ; † May 16, 2009 in Ostrava , Czech Republic ) was a Czech fusion and jazz musician ( bass guitar , double bass , piano ), composer , arranger and band leader .

Life

After attending grammar school in 1969, Urbánek graduated from the Music Conservatory in Ostrava, where in 1966 he was a founding member of the rock and fusion formation Flamingo , which was directed by Richard Kovalčík and made several records for Supraphon from the early 1970s . After Kovalčík's death in 1975 Urbánek took over the management of the ensemble until 1977. From 1967 he was also a member of the Ostravský Rozhlasový Orchestr (ORO), whose core formed the Flamingo musicians, and from 1981 headed the jazz offshoot of the ORO, the Jazzový ostravský rozhlasový orchestr (JORO), the Rudolf Březina (electric bass) , Vlastimil Bílek (drums) and Dana Vrchovská (vocals). As an arranger, he worked with numerous Czech jazz musicians such as Gustav Brom , Josef Vobruba , Karel Velebný , Karel Růžička , Jiří Stivín , Emil Viklický , Milan Svoboda , Rudolf Dašek , Laco Déczi , Radim Hladik , Svatopluk Kováč , Marie Rottrová and Vlasta Průchová . Urbánek composed titles for his JORO ensemble, as well as a sonata for saxophone and piano as well as music for film and television. In 1972 he had a supporting role in the feature film Smrt si vybírá ( Death is picky ).
