Jigsaw was a British pop band from the 1960s and 1970s, best known for their 1975 hit Sky High .

Band history

The band was founded in 1966 in the West Midlands of England . Originally Jigsaw consisted of six members who had all played in other bands before. Tony Campbell and two other musicians, for example, had been with the Mighty Avengers , Barrie Bernard with Pinkerton's Colors , all of which had already been successful in the English charts.

Three of the founding members left the band as a result, in addition to Campbell and Bernard, Clive Scott stayed. For this, a member was added with the drummer Des Dyer, who not only became the lead singer of Jigsaw , but also became the main songwriter together with Scott. For a long time, however, the band remained without much success, and although they released a dozen singles over the years, they could not land a hit.

In 1974 one of her songs finally became a hit, but not by herself. With covers of Who Do You Think You Are , Candlewick Green reached number 21 in the UK and Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods number 15 in the US. Jigsaw had their breakthrough the following year . They recorded the song Sky High for the film The Man from Hong Kong , an Asian-Australian Kung Fu film (starring Jimmy Wang Yu and George Lazenby , among others ). The song became a top 10 hit in their homeland. They also reached the top 20 in several other European countries. Jigsaw was even more successful in Asia, Oceania and also the USA, where they achieved top positions. The corresponding album, also called Sky High , and a few other songs were also successful there.

At the end of the 1970s the success subsided and in the early 1980s the band gradually broke up. Scott Dyer and tried in 1983 with the band Casablanca at the Euro Vision Song Contest , were in the home decider but only fourth. Two years later Dyer tried again as a solo singer with the joint composition Energy , but failed again in fourth. Until the 1990s they worked together as authors for Nicki French and Boyzone, among others . Scott also worked long with Ian Levine before he died in 2009. Barrie Bernard also stayed in the music business as a DJ, while Campbell retreated into middle class life and became a hairdresser.

The song Sky High became a minor hit in England in 1995 by the singer Newton . In the song New York City from ATC the intro is from the song as a sample. Furthermore, the beginning of the song from October 1, 1985 to May 22, 2016 was the theme tune of the Schleswig-Holstein magazine , the regional TV news of the NDR television for Schleswig-Holstein.
