Jim Danforth
Jim Danforth (* 1940 in Ohio , USA ) is an American trick technician who became known for his use of stop motion .
Life
Jim Danforth took an early interest in animation in film. At Art Clokey , he learned the basics of the profession. The employment at Project Unlimited, for which he worked between 1960 and 1964, was formative for his further career. The company was responsible for the special effects for George Pal's films. Using stop-motion technology, he worked on the MGM productions The Time Machine , Atlantis - The Lost Continent , The Wonder World of the Brothers Grimm and The Mysterious Dr. Lao . He received an Oscar nomination for the last film.
Danforth indirectly came into contact with the work of stop-motion pioneer Willis O'Brien when he was hired by Linwood G. Dunn for A Totally, Totally Crazy World to continue the work of the late O'Brien.
Several times he followed in the footsteps of the trick technician Ray Harryhausen . With Project Unlimited he worked on the special effects of The Ruler of Cornwall , which was heavily based on Harryhausen's film Sindbad's 7th Journey . As a replacement for Harryhausen, Hammer Films signed him for the sequel to A Million Years Before Our Time . The special effects for When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth received an Oscar nomination. With his role model Harryhausen he was finally able to work together in the battle of the titans .
Since Robur - The Lord of the 7 Continents , Jim Danforth has also worked as a miniature and model maker in various film productions. Since the stop-motion process was avoided more and more due to the high costs, he has appeared mainly as a matte painter since the dinosaurs ruled the earth . He worked several times with director John Carpenter .
