Jim Lackey

James McGee "Jim" Lackey (* 5. March 1936 in Lincolnton , North Carolina ; † 9. March 2013 in Charlotte , North Carolina) was an American jazz - drummer and bandleader .

Lackey started playing drums when he was 14. After attending Hickory High School, he served in the US Navy from 1954-56; then he studied at Lenoir Rhyne College. During his career as a professional musician, he worked a. a. with Loonis McGlohon and with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, conducted by Ray McKinley , in which he played at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. He also played with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and as an accompanist for Judy Garland and Etta James . For 25 years he was the leader of the 7th Street Gator Band, with whom he performed in the Cajun Queen restaurant in his home town of Charlotte. Lackey, who participated in 23 recording sessions between 1961 and 1987, can also be heard on recordings by Jackie Cain ( So Many Stars ), Teddi King and Jim Stack.
