Jimmy O. Yang , also Jimmy Ouyang ( chin .: 歐陽 萬 成; born June 11, 1987 in Hong Kong as Au-yeung Man-Sing ) is a Chinese - American actor , stand-up comedian and book author . He gained fame primarily through the role of Jian Yang from the series Silicon Valley .

Early years

Jimmy O. Yang was born as Au-yeung Man-Sing in Hong Kong as the son of Chinese migrants. In 2000, when Yang was 13, the family migrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles . Some of his relatives already lived in the States. His father wanted him and his brother Roy to have a good education. With the beginning of the eighth grade he attended the John Burroughs Middle School. He then moved to Beverly Hills High School. After graduation, he began studying economics at the University of California, San Diego , which he graduated in 2009. The opening speech of the closing event was given by Mike Judge , in whose series Silicon Valley , Yang would later play one of the leading roles.

Since 2015, Yang has been a US citizen in addition to Chinese citizenship. In addition to his native Cantonese , he is also fluent in English and Mandarin .

Career

Yang has been a stand-up comedian since he was 21. In 2012 he took on his first role in front of the camera with a guest appearance on the series 2 Broke Girls . He subsequently appeared in guest roles in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD , It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia , New Girl , Criminal Minds and Battle Creek . He took on his first film role in Prakti.com in 2013 , although he was not featured in the credits. In 2014, he took on a supporting role as Jian Yang in the first season of the HBO series Silicon Valley . He joined the main cast of the series at the beginning of season two and has been in the role ever since. With the money he earned as a guest actor in the course of the first season, he bought a Toyota Prius to drive for the dispatcher Uber to earn additional money for the time between the first and second season.

In 2016 he acted as Dun Meng in the film Boston . The role of his parents was taken over by his birth parents, Ping Ping Yang and Wingkay Leung. In 2017, Yang played the cameraman Mike in the crime comedy El Camino Christmas . A year later he took on a supporting role as Bernard Tai in Crazy Rich .

In March he published a book entitled "How to American: An Immigrant's Guide to Disappointing Your Parents," and Mike Judge wrote the foreword. From 2018 he went on tour as a comedian, which had the same title as the book. In addition to his appearances in film, television and as a comedian, he also voiced some characters from animated series and films, for example in The Simpsons , American Dad or The LEGO Movie 2 . In 2020 he played as Dr. Chan Kaifang a supporting role in the series Space Force streaming provider Netflix .
