The Mtafiti is a research vessel of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI).

history

The ship was built at the Scheepswerf van Langerbrugge as the Loodsboot 2 pilot boat and put into service in 1977. Home port was Antwerp .

In 2000 it was converted into a research ship for the Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee in Ostend . The new name of the ship was Zeeleeuw (sea lion), Ostend's home port. The Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee took the ship to 2012 for research before the Belgian coast and in the Scheldt estuary, bereedert it was DAB Vloot. In 2012 the ship was replaced by the Simon Stevin . The Zeeleeuw had covered around 155,000 km in the course of its service life .

In 2013 the ship was handed over to Kenya as part of a collaboration between the Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute . For this purpose, it was adapted for the new tasks at the IDP Scheepswerf in Ostend. The transfer to Kenya began on August 31, 2013. The ship reached Mombasa on October 25, 2013 and was put back into service on January 27, 2014.

The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute operates the ship under the name Mtafiti ( Swahili for "researcher") and uses it in particular in the western Indian Ocean off the coast of Kenya.
