The Simon Stevin is a research ship from the Belgian research institute Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee.

history

The Damen- type "Fishery Research Vessel 3609" was built under the hull number 556055 at the Maaskant Shipyards in Stellendam , which belongs to the Damen Shipyards Group . The hull was delivered by Damen Shipyards Galati and the end of 2011 to cover the SAL - Schwergutschiffes Paula to Rotterdam shipped. The ship was completed in May 2012. The construction costs amounted to 11.5 million euros, and a further 1 million euros were spent on the scientific equipment. When designing the ship type, the experience with the 2001-built research ship Prince Madog of Bangor University was used.

The ship entered service in September 2012. It is named after the Flemish natural scientist Simon Stevin . Owner and ship manager of the ship is the DAB Vloot. The Simon Stevin replaced the Zeeleeuw used from 2001 to 2012 .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . For electricity generation are three Scania - diesel engines each with 550  kW power available, the three Stamford generators of 600  kVA apparent power drive. The ship is propelled by two Indar electric motors, each with an output of 520 kW, which act on two fixed propellers . The ship is equipped with a bow thruster with an output of 200 kW. It has a dynamic positioning system .

A wet and a dry laboratory as well as a computer room are set up on board. On the observation deck there is a lookout point for observing sea ​​birds and marine mammals .

There is space on board for 20 people, who can be accommodated in nine double cabins and two single cabins. The crew consists of seven seamen for day trips and ten for longer trips. Twelve scientists can be embarked on day trips and ten on longer trips.

At the rear of the ship there is an open 49 m² working deck. A rear boom that can lift 6 t is installed at the stern . Another lifting tool with a capacity of one ton and a telescopic arm is located on the starboard side of the ship. In the area of ​​the working deck, a crane is installed to take over and move loads. The crane can lift 3.6 t. Containers can also be carried on the working deck .

The ship is equipped with several winches for towing research equipment and nets as well as with sonar and echo sounders and can be used for the use of an ROV .

The ship is heated with the waste heat from the engines. It fulfills the requirements of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea with regard to the emission of underwater noise (ICES 209). The ship, which is approved for voyages up to 200  nautical miles from the coast, is primarily used in the southern North Sea and in the east of the English Channel . The ship can stay at sea for five days.
