The place Jindabyne is located in the southeast of New South Wales in Australia on Lake Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains . The place is 61 km from Cooma and 462 km from Sydney . The place name means valley in the language of the Aborigines . Originally there was no lake in this area and the location had to be relocated when the Lake Jindabyne dam was built for the Snowy Mountains system .

Locality

Jindabyne is a popular destination for tourists, especially in winter, as it is not far from the ski areas in Kosciuszko National Park . The place can be reached on several road links, such as Kosciuszko Road , Alpine Way and Barry Way . The Thredbo and Perisher Blue ski areas are around 30 minutes by car. In the summer, numerous tourists come for fishing and water sports. The place is relatively high by Australian standards at 911 meters above sea level. Light snowfalls are to be expected in winter. Jindabyne has a public Central School and a private Snowy Mountains Grammar School .

Movies and music

Jindabyne was the location of two films including AFI winner Somersault - How Perfume in the Air in 2004 and Jindabyne - Somewhere in Australia in 2006, which was recognized by the Australian Film Institute . Several songs have been written about the place, such as Goodbye Jindabyne in 2007, Goodbye Carinne Petersen in 2008, Around Jindabyne and "Jindabyne" (2013) by the folk-singer-songwriter Isaac Graham.
