Jitzhar

Jitzhar ( Hebrew : יִצְהָר, German: freshly squeezed olive oil) is an Israeli settlement in the northern West Bank . The settlement was founded in 1984 and belongs to the Shomron regional administration . It was named after an old Hebrew-Bilbic word for olive oil.

The international community, like all Israeli settlements in the territories occupied since 1967, regards Yitzhar as illegal under international law. Israel denies this.

location

Jitzhar is east of the Israeli barrier , around 6 kilometers south of Nablus and 7.5 kilometers northeast of Ariel . The settlement is close to Highway 60 , which crosses the West Bank in a north-south direction, on a hill surrounded by a number of Palestinian towns (Madama, Asira al-Qibliya, Urif, Einabus, Huwara and Burin). There are a number of outposts belonging to the settlement near the settlement.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict

In and around Jitzhar there are repeated violent clashes between Palestinians , Israeli settlers and soldiers . The residents of Yitzhar are a particularly radical part of the settler movement and the settlement is considered the epicenter of the so-called “price tag attacks”. Such attacks target innocent Palestinian civilians and their property (houses, cars, fields, etc.) in response to Palestinian violence or actions by Israeli authorities against the settlements.

There were also several fatal attacks on the settlers from the Palestinian side:

  • On August 5, 1998, two settlers were shot dead while on patrol near the settlement. During the subsequent funeral procession , which led from Jerusalem through the West Bank, settlers announced an expansion of the settlement. The announcement was supported by Prime Minister Netanyahu .
  • On September 13, 2008, a Palestinian broke into Shalhevet outpost and set a building on fire. A 9-year-old child who noticed the arson and wanted to get help was attacked by the Palestinian attacker with a knife and slightly injured. In response to the incident, dozens of Jitzhar settlers stormed the village of Asira al-Qibliya , damaging cars and window panes, firing live ammunition and injuring eight Palestinian residents of the village. A week later, a 14-year-old Palestinian was shot dead while making his way to the settlement to throw a Molotov cocktail at the settlement. Police later said the attacker who was killed was the one who had been responsible for the arson and knife attack a week earlier.
