Shomron ( Hebrew מועצה אזורית שומרון, ן, Mo'atza Azorit Shomron) is an Israeli regional government in Samaria in the West Bank . The seat of the administration is in Elon More.

location

Shomron is located in the northern West Bank , in the hills of Samaria .

The regional administration is divided into three geographical regions due to its size:

  • Northern Samaria with a total population of about 2000 inhabitants consists of the settlements: Chermes, Chinanit, Mevo Dotan, Reichan and Schaked. The settlements Ganim, Kadim, Chomes and Sa Nur , which were abandoned in 2005, are also located there.
  • Central-west Samaria with a total population of around 18,000 inhabitants consists of the settlements Alei Zahav, Awnei Chefetz, Barkan, Etz Efraim, Einav, Jakir, Kirjat Netafim, Ma'ale Shomron, Nofim, Pedu'el, Revava, Sal'it , Sha'arei Tikwa, Schavei Shomron and Tzufim
  • Mountain region with a total population of around 4000 inhabitants. One block with 3000 inhabitants is located near Nablus and consists of the settlements Elon More, Bracha, Itamar and Jitzhar, the other block further south with around 1000 inhabitants in the settlements of Kfar Tapuach, Migdalim, Nofei Nehemia and Rechelim

The localities Alfei Menasche, Ariel, Elkana, Immanuel, Karnei Schomron, Kedumim and Oranit are surrounded by the territory of the regional administration, but now form independent local administrations .

history

The name of the regional administration Shomron refers to the historical region of Samaria in antiquity. In the coat of arms there is the sentence from biblical times: "You shall again plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria." (Jeremiah 31.5)

In the Six Day War of 1967, Israel occupied what was later to become the regional administration. It was founded in April 1979 for the settlements of Ariel , Elkana, Karnei Schomron, Kedumim, Kfar Tapuach, Mevo Dotan and Schavei Schomron.

Ariel , Elkanah, Karnei Shomron and Kedumim acquired in the meantime the status of a local government or city administration, although geographically within the boundaries of the Shomron regional council, they now form a separate administrative unit.

In the Second Intifada from September 2000 to February 2005, attacks by Palestinian terrorists killed 43 people on the territory of the regional administration.

On September 28, 2002, four Jewish residents were killed and another injured in a attack by Palestinian terrorists on Elon Moreh. The assassins broke into the settlement in the evening and fired automatic weapons at the residents in a residential building. The victims are Rahel and David Gavish (both 50 years old), their son Avraham (20) and the father of Rahel Gavish, Yitzhak Kanner (81).

In August and September 2005, the settlements of Khomesch, Ganim, Kadim and Sa Nur in northern Shomron were given up as part of the decoupling plan.

The barrier, which was completed in 2008, divides the area of the regional administration. The settlements Alei Zahav, Barkan, Chinanit, Etz Efraim, Jakir, Kirjat Netafim, Nofim, Ma'ale Shomron, Pedu'el, Reichan, Revava, Sal'it, Scha'arei Tikva, Shaked and Tzufim are on the western Israeli Page. The remaining settlements are scattered between the Palestinian territories.

On January 9, 2018, 35-year-old Rabbi Rasiel Schevach was murdered with 22 bullets fired at him near his apartment in the Havat Gilad outpost near Nablus . He leaves behind his wife Jael Schevach and six children between the ages of ten years and ten months.

On March 16, 2018, a Palestinian motorist intentionally rammed an Israeli vehicle carrying four soldiers near Mevo Dotan. Two Israelis died and the other two were injured. The slightly injured assassin was arrested.

On October 7, 2018, a Palestinian murdered 29-year-old Israeli Kim Levengrond Jeheskel and 35-year-old Israeli Siv Hajjbi in the Barkan industrial park after he had tied them up. Another Israeli woman was wounded. The industrial area is a symbol of lived coexistence, in which Israelis and Palestinians work together.

The Schomron regional administration is responsible for over 29 settlements with a total population of 34,100 people in 2014.
