João Amazonas de Souza Pedroso (born January 1, 1912 in Belém ; † May 27, 2002 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian Marxist theorist and politician of the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB), as well as guerrilla fighter of the guerrillas of Araguaia .

Life

João Amazonas was born on January 1, 1912 in Belém, the capital of the state of Pará in northern Brazil . At the age of 23, the Amazon joined the Aliança Nacional Libertadora (ANL), an alliance against the spread, supported by the Partido Comunista do Brasil (back then under the abbreviation “PCB”) but which went beyond party and ideological boundaries fascist tendencies within Brazil. At that time, Brazil was ruled authoritarian by the dictator Getúlio Dornelles Vargas . In the next few years Amazonas became a member of both the União da Juventude Comunista and the PCB, which elected him to its Central Committee for the first time in 1943 . Amazon was one of the critics of the XX. Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), as well as the consequences of de-Stalinization , also within the communist parties outside the USSR and especially the PCB. In the subsequent division of the PCB, he remained a member of the Partido Comunista do Brasil, which adopted the new abbreviation PCdoB and did not follow the Stalin-critical faction, which kept the abbreviation PCB , but called itself Partido Comunista Brasileiro from then on . In the further course, the PCdoB, also through the influence of the Amazon, increasingly rejected the course of the CPSU and orientated itself more closely to the political guidelines embodied by Mao Tse-Tung and later Enver Hoxha . At the same time, the Amazonas was a member of the Araguaia guerrilla from 1968 to 1972 and fought within this guerrilla against the military dictatorship then ruling in Brazil .
