Joško Tischler (born May 8, 1902 in Littermoos, Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See ; † January 23, 1979 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian politician and high school professor . In 1945, Tischler was a member of the provisional government of Piesch III .

biography

Tischler studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1926. He then passed the teaching examination in 1927 and then worked at the Fürstenfeld grammar school from 1928 to 1934 . He then taught in Villach from 1934 to 1939 and in Bregenz from 1939 to 1945 . After teaching at the Klagenfurt grammar school from 1947 to 1957, in autumn 1957 he was appointed director of the newly founded federal grammar school for Slovenes .

In the cultural field, Tischler had been working in the Slovenska kršèansko-socialna zveza za Koroško (Slovenian Christian-Social Association for Carinthia) since his Matura, and in 1937 he took over the chairmanship of the association. However, after he criticized the increasing repression of the cultural life of the Carinthian Slovenes, he was forcibly transferred to Bregenz in February 1939. After the end of the Second World War he returned to Carinthia and in July 1945 obtained from the British authorities that Slovenian deportees would not be sent back to Germany. From July 25, 1945 to the beginning of November 1945, he was a member of the provisional state government and worked with other representatives of the Carinthian Slovenes on a school ordinance that stipulated compulsory bilingual instruction in the bilingual area. In addition, Tischler was chairman of the regional committee of the Slovene Liberation Front OF until the end of November 1945, a member of the extended committee until January 9, 1948, and chairman of the Slovene Cultural Association from 1946 to 1948.

After he came into conflict with the leadership of the OF Liberation Front, he founded the Council of Carinthian Slovenes in 1949, which he also chaired from 1949 to 1960 and from 1972 to 1976. Together with Franci Zwitter, he tried to organize a uniform appearance for the Carinthian Slovenes on various issues, and his educational initiatives such as the 1945 School Ordinance and the establishment of the Federal High School for Slovenes in 1957 were of lasting importance for the Carinthian Slovenes.

After Tischler's death in 1979, the “Joško-Tischler-Preis / Tischlerjeva nagrada” was introduced, which is awarded annually on the day of his death to deserving Slovenes. Valentin Oman and Valentin Inzko received the prize, among others .
