Joachim Münch (Admiral)

Joachim Münch (born February 21, 1928 in Chemnitz ; † 2016 ) was a rear admiral in the People's Navy of the German Democratic Republic .

Life

Joachim Münch, the son of a machinist, began training as an electrician after attending school in 1942 , but was only drafted into the Reich Labor Service (RAD) during the Second World War in 1944 and then into the Wehrmacht in 1945 . After the war he continued his professional training and in 1946 became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). After completing his professional training, he worked as a company electrician from 1946 to 1948 and also obtained his Abitur from 1948 to 1949 as a student at the pre-study institute in Chemnitz . Between 1949 and 1954 he graduated from the Technical University of Dresden with a degree in engineering, and on August 3, 1954, he joined the armed organs of the GDR . From 1954 to 1956 he was head of the chair for electrical engineering at the Institute for Naval Officers of the People's Police and subsequently between 1956 and 1958 he was head of the chair for electrical engineering at the naval forces officers' school , where he was head of the combat section from 1959 to 1960 V was. In 1961 he became Head of Coordination and Control as well as Deputy Chief of Technology in the command of the naval forces.

Münch then acted from 1962 to 1963 as head of the Scientific and Technical Center and also deputy chief for technology and armament in the command of the People's Navy . After he was an officer auditor at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy in Dresden between 1963 and 1964 , he was employed from 1964 to 1965 as head of the shipbuilding technology department and also as deputy head of rear services for technology and armament in the command of the Volksmarine. He was then head of the New Technology Department in the command of the People's Navy between 1965 and 1968. Most recently, from 1968 until his release on November 30, 1989, he was again deputy chief of rear services for technology and armament in the command of the People's Navy. On October 7, 1982, on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the GDR , Kapitän zur See Münch was promoted to Rear Admiral. For his services in the GDR he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze as well as the battle medal “For merits to the people and fatherland” in silver. He also earned a doctorate in military science (Dr. rer. Mil.).
