The officers' college of the Volksmarine (short: OHS of the VM ) in Stralsund , was named Karl Liebknecht and was a military college of the GDR . It served the training of commanders and specialists for units of the armed forces , special troops and services of the People's Navy of the NVA .
history
The officers' college goes back to the one that was opened on July 1, 1956 as the "Naval Officer College" and the "Engineering College" that was merged with it. On October 6, 1956, the military training facility was renamed "Naval Officer School". On the same day the school was awarded the troop flag. The establishment of the uniform teaching facility with the training profiles of naval officers, ship engine officers and intelligence officers (the latter in the sense of telecommunications officers) had a positive effect on the effectiveness of the training. It corresponded to the requirements of the further development of the naval forces, in particular the necessities of increased technical and weapons training.
According to their own understanding, the focus was on building modern naval forces of the NVA, which should be able to enforce common security interests in the Baltic Sea together with the "Baltic Fleet of the USSR" and the "Polish Naval War Fleet". This placed increasing demands on the officers to be trained. Accordingly, on December 1, 1956, the three- to four-year officer training was switched over. The training programs were redesigned on the basis of Soviet guidelines.
The takeover of the school ship "Ernst Thälmann" in 1967 by the school made a major contribution to making the training practice-oriented.
In July 1958 the first navigation training voyage was carried out with student officers in the Riga Bay . Since then, such journeys have become an integral part of the training process. In July 1959, student officers stayed for the first time in Leningrad , today's Saint Petersburg in Russia . Visits to Riga , Tallinn , Gdansk and Swinoujscie followed . The navigation training and instruction trips were given great importance to consolidate nautical and navigational knowledge. They also served to get to know the lake area.
From July 1959, the structure of the subjects was changed, on-board internships were introduced for all academic years, and an internship of several months to familiarize themselves with the first officer assignment was provided for officer students in their fourth year of study. On the part of the teaching officers, this was associated with further qualification in the service position, as well as the strengthening of the so-called party-political education and upbringing.
With the beginning of the training year 1963/64, the officers' school of the Volksmarine received the status of a military technical school. On the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the founding of the NVA, it was given the honorary name "Karl Liebknecht".
From the 1970s onwards there were higher demands on the offspring of officers in all NVA branches, so that the transition to university education became necessary. After appropriate preparation and qualification of the teaching staff, the teaching institution was given the status of an "officers' college" with effect from January 4, 1971. Now the training reached a higher theoretical level, became more troop-related and more practical.
So that the graduate had the conditions under probation in the military service, given with appropriate assessment and cadres need further studies at the military academy Friedrich Engels , the Military Political Academy Wilhelm Pieck take, but also for further studies at a military academy of the former USSR up for general staff training .
A scientific council was founded at the officers' college and the sections formed councils from February 1972. From 1973, high-performing officer students were included in scientific work under the direction of responsible teaching officers. In cooperation with the "Friedrich Engels Military Academy", other higher education institutions of the NVA and departments of the People's Navy, the officers' college organized theoretical conferences and colloquia.
In June 1976 the teaching facility received the new training ship " Wilhelm Pieck ". Sailing into distant sea areas, including the Black Sea, the Northern European Sea and the Caribbean, made it possible to develop and develop the nautical and technical skills and abilities of the officer students.
On September 1, 1983, the officers' college began training naval officers with a diploma. In addition, officers and ensigns have been trained for various specializations.
