Joachim Menzhausen

Joachim Menzhausen (born June 14, 1930 in Leipzig ; † January 18, 2019 in Dresden ) was a German art historian . From 1961 to 1992 he was director of the Green Vault in Dresden.

Life

Menzhausen completed his school education in Leipzig in 1950 when he graduated from high school. He then studied art history and classical archeology at the Karl Marx University there until 1954 , where he received his doctorate in 1963 with a dissertation on the developmental position of Gottfried Schadow's statues . In addition, he worked at Dresden museums from 1957 : 1957/58 at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister , since 1959 at the Green Vault (1959/60), whose directorate he took over in 1961. He held this position until his early retirement in 1992. He is the author of numerous books on the Dresden art collections and more generally on the history of art in Saxony.

He was married to the art historian Ingelore Menzhausen (1923–2006), director of the Dresden porcelain collection.
