Joachim Weimann (* 14. February 1956 in Dusseldorf ) is Professor of Economics at the Otto von Guericke - University of Magdeburg .

Joachim Weimann studied economics at Bielefeld University . He received his doctorate in 1986 and, after completing his habilitation at the University of Dortmund, was appointed to the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1992 . In 1994 he moved to Magdeburg to the Chair of Economic Policy . Between 1998 and 2008 he was dean of the Faculty of Economics (FWW). Weimann is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the economic policy journal Wirtschaftsdienst . He is the scientific director of the Magdeburg experimental laboratory for economic research. Since 2006 he has been chairman of the Society for Experimental Economic Research (GfeW). From 2012 to 2018 he was or is a member of the Senate Committee and the Approval Committee of the DFG for Research Training Groups. He is a member of Acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering .

In 2001, Weimann received the research award from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, and in 2006 the Woitschach research award together with Ronnie Schöb . and in 2013 the Schmölders Research Prize of the Social Science Committee of the Verein für Socialpolitik together with Ronnie Schöb, Andreas Knabe and Steffen Rätzel

Weimann's research focuses on environmental economics , economic policy , happiness research , behavioral economics and experimental economic research . In addition to numerous publications in international journals, he has written textbooks on environmental economics (3rd edition 1995), economic policy (5th edition 2009) and experimental economic research (1st edition 2019). All textbooks are published by Springer-Verlag .

In addition to his research work, Joachim Weimann has repeatedly commented on current problems in economic policy. Together with his colleague Ronnie Schöb, for example, he published the book Work is feasible in 2002 , in which the " Magdeburg Alternative " is presented, a reform proposal that aims in particular at reducing unemployment among low-skilled people.

In his book The Climate Policy Catastrophe , Weimann criticizes German climate policy with state regulations and subsidies. From his point of view, this policy is not able to guarantee a cost-efficient climate policy. In essence, he calls for emission reductions to be organized in such a way that they can be achieved at a minimum cost per tonne of carbon dioxide, because this is the only way to achieve maximum emission avoidance with the limited resources available for climate protection. He therefore advocates taxation of emissions or expanded certificate trading because these instruments ensure cost efficiency. In the overall mix, such a solution definitely enables the continued use of existing energy sources, such as lignite , as long as it is still economical even if the framework conditions change. The decision has to be made by the market. He also represents this point of view in the organ of the German Brown Coal Initiative . In January 2020 he received the Regulatory Policy Award of the Association of Family Entrepreneurs for his article "Underestimated Certificate Trade".

Together with his Magdeburg colleague Andreas Knabe, he published a proposal for pension reform in 2017, which was later developed into the concept paper for the "Germany pension" in cooperation with Hessian state politicians. At its core, the Deutschlandrente consists of three elements: First, a transition from an opt-in to an opt-out solution is proposed for private pension insurance. Second, a state-organized Germany fund is to offer a standard product for private pension insurance, and thirdly, the Riester pension system is to be radically simplified. All of these suggestions are based on behavioral economic insights.

Weimann also takes a market-oriented position in the field of business ethics and criticizes integrative business ethics , as it is e.g. B. Peter Ulrich represents.
