Joan Gibert i Camins (* 1890 in Barcelona ; † August 9, 1966 there ) was a Catalan pianist, harpsichordist, composer and music teacher. He was a great connoisseur of early music and brought the harpsichord back to the concert halls of Catalonia.

life and work

Joan Gibert studied at the City Conservatory of Barcelona with Lluís Millet and Robert Goberna . At the age of 15, she made her debut in a public concert in Barcelona in 1905. From 1920 to 1928 he completed in-depth studies in Paris with Alfred Cortot , Vincent d'Indy and Wanda Landowska .

In 1928 he returned to Barcelona and made a remarkable contribution to the city's musical life. He gave numerous piano and harpsichord concerts and was accompanied by artists such as Lilly Ulanowsky , Conchita Badía , Concepción Callao , Mercè Plantada and Alícia Halffter . He was also a member of the Chopin Festival Orchestra conducted by Pau Casals from 1931, the Bach Festival Orchestra conducted by Joan Lamote de Grignon from 1932, the Iberia Quartet and the Associació Obrera de Concerts (workers' concert association founded by Pau Casals) ). Gibert was a co-founder of the Compositors Independents de Catalunya (CIC). This so-called CIC was also very interested in questions of music education, so that Gibert developed a musical education plan for primary schools in Catalonia with the music professors Ainaud, Cervera and E. Gibert Camins (Joan Gibert's brother).

In 1945 he was appointed professor for harpsichord and two years later also professor for piano. He frequently wrote music reviews for the Revista Musical Catalana , for La Publicitat and for French press organs. He made an important contribution to the re-establishment of musical culture after the Spanish Civil War in Catalonia.

As a composer, Gibert has created several works for piano, voice and choir.
