Joan Pich i Santasusana
Joan Pich i Santasusana (born October 23, 1911 in Sant Andreu de Palomar , † July 9, 1999 in Badalona ) was a Catalan conductor , cellist , composer and music teacher .
life and work
Pich studied cello with Josep Soler and composition with Enric Morera at the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona .
At the age of 15 he joined the Orquestra Pau Casals as a cellist . In 1935 he took over the management of the Institut Orquestral de l'Associació Obrera de Concerts (Orchestra Institute of the Workers' Concert Association). In 1936 he studied orchestration at the Geneva Conservatory with Hermann Scherchen . In 1950 he was appointed to the chair of harmony and counterpoint at the Barcelona Conservatory , of which he was director from 1967 to 1976. Later he was the director of the Escola Municipal de Música de Badalona ( Badalona Conservatory).
From 1941 he directed the Orquestra Simfònica de Ràdio Associació de Catalunya (Radio Symphony Orchestra of Catalonia). In 1946 he was appointed chief conductor of the Orquestra Filharmònica de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Philharmonic Orchestra of Las Palmas). From 1958 to 1967 he directed the Banda Municipal de Barcelona .
Pich i Santasusana composed numerous art songs, sardanas , the symphonic poem De la nostra vida and the piano preludes 78 (1978). Pich i Santasusana was editor of the Enciclopedia de la Música (publisher: De Gassó Hnos, Barcelona 1960).
