Jochen Herling (born April 14, 1943 in Braunschweig ) is a Luxembourg photographer of German descent.

life and work

Herling's father was a lens grinder for the Brunswick camera manufacturer Voigtländer . At the age of 14, Jochen Herling won a photo competition organized by the Braunschweiger Zeitung about the Riddagshausen nature reserve belonging to the city of Braunschweig . From then on, his career aspirations were clear. Herling trained as a photographer and then worked as a science photographer. To the military service in Germany to escape, Herling went abroad.

In Luxembourg he found his first job with the German-language weekly magazine Revue . In 1979, Herling and others founded Friends of Edward Steichen , an association dedicated to the work of the Luxembourg-born photographer Edward Steichen . In 1980, Herling became a Luxembourg citizen . From 1981 he worked as a freelance artist and founded PHOTO-GALERIE 52 together with his wife . Herling worked for the weekly newspaper d'Lëtzebuerger Land from 1982 to 2001 , and was also the official photographer of the family of the Luxembourg Grand Duke Jean and his wife Joséphine Charlotte . Because of the increasing digital photography , Jochen Herling gave up photography in 2002.

On the occasion of his 75th birthday in 2018, the Photo Library of the City of Luxembourg dedicated an exhibition to him.

Herling lives in Luxembourg, is married and has three children.
