Jochen Vollmer (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jochen Vollmer ( September 30, 1939 - March 26, 2014 ) was a German Protestant theologian . He was a pastor in the ELK Württemberg . Vollmer was considered a politically controversial theologian and wrote various papers on the problem of violence and peace issues.

Jochen Vollmer studied Protestant theology and did his doctorate on the Old Testament . He worked as a parish priest in the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . At first Vollmer was a pastor in Schwäbisch Hall and taught Protestant religion at the Evangelical School Center in Michelbach from 1976 to 1980 .

In 1981 Vollmer wanted to switch fully to school work. The Stuttgart Oberkirchenrat rejected this and was not prepared to extend Vollmer's expiring temporary contract. The reason was that Vollmer had publicly pointed out the possible discrepancy between constitutional norm and constitutional reality in the Federal Republic. Vollmer had added the sentence to the “instruction and declaration” that everyone in the public service has to sign, stating that standing up for the constitution of the Federal Republic also obliges him “if necessary for the intention of the free democratic basic order formulated in the Basic Law against its inadequate Realization in the Federal Republic of Germany and in the state of Baden-Württemberg ”. As Walter Jens wrote in 1981, Volmer had "articulated what Gustav Heinemann , Helmut Simon , Martin Hirsch , to name just them, uttered again and again with the necessary decisiveness."

According to Jens, the President of the Tübingen High School Authority Pitsch stated that Vollmer was not an enemy of the constitution, but he considered him too courageous, too combative, too little thought that the civil servant would have to give up his status in the event of a conflict between loyalty and conscientious objection.

Vollmer was finally active as a school priest in Mössingen, Horb and at the Balingen town church until he retired to Reutlingen. For a long time Jochen Vollmer was chairman of the convention of pastors for conscientious objectors and those doing community service in the Evangelical Church of Württemberg.

In 2011 his essay “From the national god Yahweh to the lord of the world and all peoples” was published in the Deutsches Pfarrerblatt . In it he demanded that Israel should include the expulsion of the Palestinians in its historical awareness as well as the Holocaust. Vollmer linked this question with the legitimacy of the State of Israel. Active members of the Christian-Jewish dialogue accused him of spreading “ anti-Semitic manure”.
