Life

His father was Johannes (Lur-) Käs, mayor of Trarbach an der Mosel and his mother was his second wife, he was the oldest of three brothers, his two younger brothers Simon and Burcardus and his older half-brother Heinrich Casean also studied in Freiburg.

His Latin translation of the “Combattimento spirituale” (Venezia 1589) by the Neapolitan Theatine Father Lorenzo Scupoli was particularly important , which has been documented in 20 editions and is widely used in Europe. The two-volume encyclopaedic work “Thesaurus novus utriusque Theologiae theoreticae et practicae” from 1609 appeared in a second edition in 1621 and is considered to be his most mature work. In addition to his theological work, he was closely involved in the organization of the university. He was involved in the organization of the university archive, the library archive and the library registry, as well as the creation of the university's fief book. He chaired the theological faculty 21 times and was rector of the university 9 times. In 1576, when the lectures were moved to Radolfzell because of the plague , he was Vice Rector. During his time the revision of the statutes of the theological faculty (1578 and 1586), the reformulation of the duties of the rector (1580) and the publication of the general university statutes (1581 and 1583) fell.

He was a strong advocate of the independence of the university and an opponent of the sovereign's desire to call Jesuits to the university, since they are not only responsible to the university in their decisions due to their strict command of obedience to their superiors.

He campaigned for the students through the private colleges in Freiburg, and especially the Collegium Pacis received financial support from him. There he worked as an educator from 1607 to 1610 even after his retirement .

After his retirement on January 7, 1605, he retired to the Freiburg Charterhouse . He joined the Carthusian monastery on February 6, 1610, and was professed on March 17, 1611.
