Joseph Merrill "Joe" Hoeffel III (born September 3, 1950 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1999 and 2005 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joe Hoeffel attended the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and then until 1972 Boston University . He then studied law until 1986 at Temple University . He has been politically active since 1972. He was an opponent of the Vietnam War and joined the Democratic Party . From 1977 to 1984 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; between 1992 and 1998 he was a district councilor in Montgomery County .

In the 1998 congressional election , Hoeffel was elected to the 13th  constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican Jon D. Fox on January 3, 1999 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2005 . The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan took place during this period .

In 2004 he renounced another candidacy. Instead, he ran for election to the US Senator , but was defeated by the Republican incumbent Arlen Specter with 42:53 percent of the vote. Between 2006 and 2007 he was Deputy Secretary of the Department of Community and Economic Development in Pennsylvania. He was then Deputy Minister of State for Economic Development. In 2010, he ran unsuccessfully in his party's primary election for governor of Pennsylvania.

Joe Hoeffel is married and has two children.
