Joe Lane (politician)

Joseph James "Joe" Lane III (born September 16, 1935 in Roswell , New Mexico , †  March 6, 2014 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). From 1987 to 1988 he was President ( Speaker ) of the House of Representatives from Arizona .

Career

Joe Lane was born on his family ranch in New Mexico, where he also spent the first few years of his life before moving to Arizona. There he attended elementary school in Willcox . He then returned to his hometown of Roswell and graduated from the New Mexico Military Academy . He then earned his bachelor's degree in agricultural science from the University of Arizona at Tucson. After graduating in 1957, he served in the US Army , in which it while he was stationed in Killeen ( Texas ) to the First Lieutenant brought. He then went into his family's agricultural business. He owned ranches in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado ; He spent most of his time at the O Bar O Ranch in Bonita, Arizona, which he sold in 1983 to fully devote himself to his political career.

In 1978 Lane moved for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives from Arizona, in which he remained after multiple re-elections until 1988. In his last legislative period from 1987 to 1988 he acted as speaker of the parliamentary chamber; he succeeded James J. Sossaman . During this time he played a key role in the impeachment of Governor Evan Mecham through the appointment of a special investigator . Mecham's supporters, who were also Republicans, attacked Lane when he was re-elected, leading to his defeat in the primary of his party.

He then belonged to the advisory staff of Governors Fife Symington and Jane Dee Hull ; the latter had followed him as speaker in the House of Representatives. He was intermittently director of the Arizona Department of Agriculture and chairman of the State Transportation Board .
