Joe Oliver

Joe Oliver PC (born May 20, 1940 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Conservative Party of Canada politician who was Minister for Natural Resources from 2011 to 2014 and Minister of Finance in the 28th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister Stephen Harper from 2014 to 2015 .

Life

Degree and investment banker

After attending school, Oliver first completed an undergraduate degree at McGill University , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a law degree there with a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) and, after being admitted to the bar in Québec, took up a position as a lawyer . A postgraduate course in professional management at the Harvard Business School , he graduated with a Master of Business Administration from (MBA).

Oliver then began a career at investment bank Merrill Lynch before, after several senior positions at other investment banks, became executive director of the Ontario Securities Commission , the securities regulator for Ontario . He then served as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Canadian Association of Investment Firms and also played an instrumental role as Chairman of the Advisory Committees of the International Council of Securities Trading Associations and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the International Organization of Securities Trading Authorities.

Member of the House of Commons and Federal Minister

After retiring from professional life, Oliver began his political career when he ran for the Conservative Party in the October 14, 2008 election in the Eglinton-Lawrence constituency in Ontario for a seat in the House of Commons , but suffered an electoral defeat. In the subsequent election on May 2, 2011 , he was elected to the House of Commons in this constituency.

Less than two weeks after the election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him to the 28th Cabinet of Canada on May 18, 2011, and took over the Ministry of Natural Resources .

After a government reshuffle, Oliver became finance minister in Harper's cabinet on March 19, 2014, succeeding Jim Flaherty , who held this post for almost eight years and died a month later on April 10, 2014. As finance minister, he is also vice-chairman of the cabinet committee on priorities and planning.
