Joseph "Joe" Shulman (born September 12, 1923 in New York City , † August 2, 1957 ) was an American jazz bassist. He played with Miles Davis on Birth of the Cool .

Joe Shulman was self-taught. He first played in 1940 at Johnnie Davis , 1942 at Les Brown , in the Army Air Force Band of Glenn Miller from 1943 to 1944, then in 1946 with Buddy Rich and 1947 with Claude Thornhill . Thornhill's arranger at this time was Gil Evans . Through him he came to the Metronome All-Stars of Miles Davis and was involved in the shooting of the formation from 1949 to 1950, later under the title Birth of the Cool to appear.

Shulman was also on tour with Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour in 1948 and 1950, worked with Lester Young and from 1951 played in a trio with Barbara Carroll , whom he married in 1954. He died of a heart attack at the age of 33 while on vacation.
