Barry Galbraith

Joseph Barry Galbraith (born December 18, 1919 in Pittsburgh , † January 13, 1983 in Bennington , Vermont ) was an American jazz guitarist of swing and cool jazz .

Live and act

Galbraith played as an autodidact for Red Norvo , Teddy Powell and Babe Russin in 1941, then for Claude Thornhill , interrupted by military service from 1942 to 1946. After that he was mainly active as a studio musician at NBC and CBS until 1955, after which he was on recordings of Miles Davis and Michel Legrand , Tal Farlow , Coleman Hawkins , John Lewis , Hal McKusick , Oscar Peterson , Max Roach , George Russell , Tony Scott and Tom Talbert involved. He also accompanied the singers Anita O'Day , Chris Connor , Billie Holiday , Helen Merrill , Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington on recordings.

In 1963/64 he was still involved in the recordings for the album The Individualism of Gil Evans , in 1965 for the soundtrack album Mickey One by Stan Getz and the orchestra by Eddie Sauter . From 1970 to 1975 Galbraith taught at the City College of New York (CUNY). After that he worked mainly as a private teacher and wrote groundbreaking textbooks for budding jazz guitarists.

Barry Galbraith took part in the recording of the tracks Jitterburg Waltz, 'Round Midnight, Wild Man Blues and Django in June 1958 ; other players in addition to Davis and Coltrane were Phil Woods , Eddie Costa , Jerome Richardson , Herbie Mann , Betty Glamann , Bill Evans , Paul Chambers and the drummer Kenny Dennis .
