Joel Brown is an American classical guitarist .

Brown, who began playing guitar in 1964 after watching The Beatles on television, completed a classical instrumental degree. As a soloist and chamber musician he has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center , the Festival of Contemporary Music in Tanglewood, the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival , the Caramoore Festival and the Killington Festival . At the Mikulov Guitar Festival in the Czech Republic he took part as a soloist with the Martinu Chamber Orchestra ; he also worked as a soloist with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra . He accompanied the singer Dawn Upshaw at Carnegie Hall , gave recitals with the singer Frederica von Stade and the Boston Pops Orchestra and had television appearances in the USA and Great Britain.

Brown is a founding member of Tritonis , a trio with flute, guitar and cello that has performed in concert halls and universities in the United States, at the Guitar Foundation of America conference in Miami and the National Flute Association meetings in New York and Boston and released the album Five Premiers — Chamber Works with Guitar .

Together with the singer and banjo player Bill Crofut and Chris Brubeck , he also worked in a crossover trio in the 1990s , which released several albums. He also recorded Dance on a Moonbeam: A Collection of Songs and Poems with Chris Brubeck, Bill Crofut and Frederica von Stade , Meryl Streep and Dawn Upshaw in 1999 . After the death of Crofut, the trio with Brubeck and Peter Madcat Ruth became the group Triple Play , which plays a crossover of jazz, blues and folk. She recorded the albums Triple Play Liv, (2000) and Watching the World (2003) and 2011 the album Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center with guest Dave Brubeck . Brown took part in the 2005 Monterey Jazz Festival with the (new) Dave Brubeck Quartet . He works in a duo formation with singer Dave Maswick .

The album Bach to Brubeck was created with the London Symphony Orchestra , with the English guitarist Edward Flower Chords and Thyme , with Empire Brass King’s Court and Celtic Fair and with Frederica from Stade Across Your Dreams . In Albany Records , the CD was released Christmas Cedar and Spruce . Brown is Senior Artist-in-Residence at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.
