The Skyttean Professorship for Politics and Rhetoric ( Swedish Skytteanska professuren i statskunskap och vältalighet ) is a venerable professorship for political science in Sweden .

Foundation, endowment

The professorship was established in 1622 by the baron and imperial councilor Johan Skytte (1577-1645) at Uppsala University . It is probably the oldest political science professorship in the world. The holders of the professorship are among the most respected political scientists in Sweden in the history of Sweden .

For the cost of the professorship , Skytte donated land belonging to him, including a stately home in the center of Uppsala , the so-called Skytteanum . It still serves as a professor's apartment today.

occupation

The final decision to fill the professorship will be made by the descendants of Johan Skytte. Today it is practiced de facto through a consistory. According to a decree by King Gustav II Adolf , the holder of the professorship receives full equality with all other professors.

Skyttean price

In addition, a prize committee from Uppsala University has been awarding the Skytteanska priset, endowed with 500,000 Swedish kronor, on November 30th every year since 1995 . It is one of the most prestigious awards in political science worldwide. The chairman of the award committee is ex officio the holder of the Skyttean professorship.
