Carole Pateman (born December 11, 1940 in Sussex ) is a British- born political scientist . She is Emerita from the University of California, Los Angeles . Her main focus in teaching, research and publications is political theory , especially democracy theory , and feminist theories.

Life

Carole Pateman grew up in a working-class family in Sussex, England. She received a scholarship to Ruskin College and was the first woman to study there. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Oxford University .

Carole Pateman has held numerous teaching and research assignments in Australia, Europe and North America. In 1990 she became Professor of Political Science at the University of California (UCLA), where she continues to teach after her retirement. She was the first woman to be President of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and President of the Australasian Political Science Association from 1991 to 1994 . In 1996 she became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 2010-11 she was President of the American Political Science Association . She teaches as an honorary professor at the School of European Studies at Cardiff University . She received honorary doctorates from the University of Helsinki and the National University of Ireland .

Her most important writings include Participation and Democratic Theory (1970) and The Problem of Political Obligation (1979). In Participation and Democratic Theory , she develops a participatory conception of democracy , inspired by the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau , John Stuart Mill and GDH Coles . Her work The Sexual Contract (1988, The Gender Contract ) has had a lasting influence on feminist theory . It has been translated into eight languages ​​and has been awarded prizes. In the book, classic ideas from the history of ideas and the classic contract theories are re-evaluated from a feminist point of view. Social and political institutions are seen as patriarchal instruments of oppression directed against women.

In 2012 Carole Pateman was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize from Uppsala University for outstanding achievements in the field of political science
