Johan Frederik van Oordt (born November 23, 1794 in Rotterdam , † December 11, 1852 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Johan Frederik van Oordt, son of Jan Willem van Oordt and Maria Louisa Gobius, had attended the Erasmus school in his hometown. In 1812 he went to Utrecht University to study the classical languages . Here he had attended the lectures of Hermann Royaards , his uncle Gabriel van Oordt , Jodocus Heringa Eliza's zoon , Jean Henri Pareau and Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde . The latter certainly encouraged him to join the literary society Utile Dulci during his student days. In 1815 he completed his military service and in 1819 became a pastor in Nederlangbroek. On April 3, 1821 he received his doctorate under the direction of his uncle in Utrecht with the thesis de Religione christiana ad conjunctionis et societatis studia alenda et promovenda cum aptissima tum efficacissima as a doctor of theology. In September 1822 he moved to Alkmaar as a pastor and on October 26, 1823 he found a new sphere of activity as a pastor in Utrecht .

In September 1822 he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Groningen , with a teaching position for Christian ethics, the interpretation of the New Testament and practical theology. He entered this office on February 20, 1829 with the introductory speech de eloquentia sacrae natura . In 1831 the teaching assignment was supplemented by dogmatics and Dutch Protestant canon law and the teaching assignment for Christian ethics was given. In Groningen he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the educational institution in 1833/34. He put down this task with the speech de religione christiana in patria nostra vi sua salutari numquam destituta . His collaboration with Petrus Hofstede de Groot (1802–1886) was likely to have been particularly fruitful for him during his time in Groningen .

In 1839 he received a call as professor of theology at the University of Leiden , with a teaching position for theoretical theology and dogmatics. He took over this chair on December 11, 1839 with the Rede de Vero in theologia unice sectando . In Leiden, too, he took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in 1841/42 . He put down this task with the Rede de Perfecta institutoris specie in JC conspicua .

Van Oordt married Henriette Jacoba Bakker (* 1803, † November 27, 1851 in Leiden), daughter of the Groningen professor of medicine Gerbrand Bakker, in Groningen on October 10, 1823. The son Jan Willem Gerbrandt van Oordt (born January 15, 1826 in Utrecht, † May 25, 1904 in Cape Town) is known from the marriage.
